Getting started: Patient Chats in Assist

Ask Assist about a patient including information from across your software apps!

Written by Adam Bragg

Start an AI Assist patient chat in seconds and save hours of chart digging and message drafting every week!

  1. Start the chat - Navigate to a patient's chart and click the green Assist button next to the patient's name in the top left corner of their chart

  2. Add cross app info - Add patient information from across your software apps to Assist by linking this patient's profiles via the Tabflows side tabs

    • NOTE: Elation, Spruce, and Hint are the only apps currently available within Assist

  3. Update app info - Update the information from each app by clicking the app icons within the Assist chat labeled "Patient records:"

    • NOTE: If you are unsure when the information from an app was last updated, simply hover over that app in the Assist chat

That's it! After starting an Assist chat about a patient you can ask Assist to summarize information buried in any one system, draft a follow up note to this patient, or write a prior auth appeal letter

Try these sample prompts with an Assist patient chat:

Pre-visit summary:

Generate a pre-visit summary in a SOAP-lite style. At the top, list the 3–5 most important topics for this patient.

Include: CC, HPI, Meds/Allergies, Problem List, Health Maintenance due items, and relevant Labs/Imaging.

Highlight trends in vitals and lab results (e.g. rising A1c, stable blood pressure).

End the summary with any critical missing action items our practice should address.

Patient message:
Write a message to this patient that explains their most recent lab results. Highlight what looks good first, then gently explain any areas that need attention. Make the message feel supportive and personal — avoid confusing medical jargon, acknowledge the patient’s effort if appropriate, and frame next steps as achievable goals. If medication changes or follow-ups are needed, explain why in simple terms and offer clear options. Close with encouragement and a reminder that our team is here if they have questions.

Appeal letter:

Draft a prior authorization appeal letter to the patient’s insurance company for [insert prescribed medication]. Pull in relevant chart details to support medical necessity, including diagnosis, recent lab values, prior treatments tried and their outcomes, and any comorbid conditions that increase the patient’s risk profile. Structure the letter in standard insurer review format: header, subject, clinical justification, closing, signature. Keep the tone professional and evidence-based, with a clear appeal to medical necessity and improved quality of life. Ensure formatting is suitable for use in the clinic’s standard letterhead template.

Improve Assist's responses by adding your practice's details in Assist Settings.
