How to use Sidekick to place a phone call

Summary 🧭: Sidekick can prepare an outbound phone call for you — for example, calling a pharmacy about a refill or confirming an appointment with another office. You review and approve a call card first; nothing dials until you start it. An AI voice agent then places the call using only what’s on the card.

Ask Sidekick to place a call

Ask Sidekick to prepare an outbound call and describe the exact objective — what the call should accomplish, in a sentence or two that makes sense on its own.

For patient-related calls, include only the minimum the callee needs:

  • the patient’s name,

  • their date of birth when the callee will verify identity (pharmacies usually do),

  • the relevant prescription, order, or appointment,

  • the provider the call is on behalf of.

Include only what the objective requires — nothing more.

What to note when prompting

A few things keep a call prompt clear and safe:

  • The agent only knows what you type. It can’t see your chat or the patient’s chart, so don’t say “call them about the patient we just discussed.” Spell out every fact the call needs — including anything the callee will ask you to verify, like a date of birth.

  • Give the exact number. Put the phone number in your prompt (and check it on the card). Sidekick won’t guess a number, and a wrong digit means a wrong call.

  • One call, one goal. Keep each prompt to a single call with a clear objective. If you need two calls, ask for them one at a time.

  • Say what “done” looks like. Add the fallback if it matters — for example, “if the refill isn’t ready, ask when it will be” — because the agent can only act on what’s on the card.

  • Minimum necessary. Include only the details the callee actually needs. Leave the rest of the chart out; the voice agent will only use what’s on the card.

  • A rough prompt is fine. You’ll review and edit the card before anything dials, so start simple and tighten the objective there.

Example prompts 📖

Type it the way you’d explain the call to a teammate — who to call, what you want, and just the details the callee needs:

  • “Call Walgreens at (949) 555-0142 and ask if Maria Alvarez’s amoxicillin refill is ready to pick up. Her date of birth is 03/14/1985 — the prescription is from Dr. Chen.”

  • “Call Dr. Patel’s office at (714) 555-0198 to confirm James Okafor’s cardiology appointment on Friday at 2pm, and ask if they need anything from us beforehand.”

  • “Call Quest Diagnostics at (949) 555-0176 and check whether Nina Brooks’s lipid panel results are back yet. DOB 11/02/1990, ordered by Dr. Ramirez.”

  • Whatever you type becomes a call card you can review and edit before anything dials, so you can fix the number or tighten the wording there too.

Review before calling 🕵️

  1. Ask Sidekick to prepare the call.

  2. Review or edit the phone number, objective, and optional context on the call card.

  3. Confirm the correct callee, and remove anything the callee doesn’t need.

  4. Select Start only when the card is correct.

  5. Follow the call status and the live transcript when it’s available.

  6. Review the final outcome before taking the next step.

Good to know 💡: Start call and Cancel stay greyed out until Sidekick has finished preparing the card. That is deliberate — the draft isn’t saved, and so isn’t decidable, until the reply finishes. If the button looks unresponsive, give it a moment rather than clicking again.

What the voice agent can use 🔒

The call is not placed when the card first appears — it waits for you to review and start it.

The voice agent receives only the information on the call card. It cannot see your Sidekick chat or the patient chart. Anything the agent needs mid-call has to be on the card, so check the objective and context before you start.

Call statuses

As the call runs, the card shows its status:

On the card

What it means

Calling…

Sidekick is connecting the call.

Call in progress…

The call is active.

Call finished

The call completed — check the summary.

The call failed before connecting.

The call couldn’t start.

No one answered the call.

The callee didn’t pick up.

Call cancelled — it was not placed.

The call was stopped before it connected.

The call was started, but its result could not be confirmed here.

Verify the result yourself before trying again.

Good to know 💡

  • You approve every call. Sidekick drafts the call; it is never placed until you review the card and start it.

  • Minimum necessary. Put only what the call needs on the card — that’s exactly what the voice agent will use.

  • No taking over the call. You set the call up on the card and the voice agent handles the conversation; there’s no way to jump in and speak on the call yourself.

  • “Could not be confirmed” means verify. If a call ends unconfirmed, check what happened yourself before asking Sidekick to try again — an approval is an intention, not proof the call connected.
